Held on June 27, 2026, at the historic Clarke Estate in Santa Fe Springs, the organization's signature annual fundraiser seamlessly blended Gatsby-inspired elegance with a powerful mission raising support for local students through scholarships, leadership development, and educational opportunities.
Guests embraced the evening's Great Gatsby theme, arriving in vintage-inspired attire that reflected the glamour and sophistication of the Jazz Age. The Clarke Estate provided the perfect backdrop, where dazzling décor, lively music, and an atmosphere of celebration welcomed community leaders, business partners, educators, families, and supporters. The festivities began with a lively cocktail reception featuring the smooth saxophone and vocals of Michael Parlett, whose energetic performance set the tone for an elegant evening. Summit Event Catering delighted guests with an exceptional selection of hors d'oeuvres as attendees mingled, participated in the silent auction, and purchased raffle tickets. Every dollar raised will help the Youth Enrichment Fund continue providing life-changing educational opportunities for local students.
As the Youth Enrichment Fund's premier annual fundraiser, The Great Destiny provides critical support for programs including CHOICES®, the Mentor Program, Future Business Leaders, leadership development initiatives, career fairs, vocational education, and college scholarships. The evening's most anticipated moment was the presentation of the 2026 Destiny Scholarships, Powell Grants, and Vocational Grants. These prestigious awards recognize students who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, perseverance, community involvement, and a commitment to making a positive difference.
2026 Destiny Scholarship Recipients
Leading this year's class of honorees was Samuel Zamora, recipient of the prestigious $20,000 Destiny Scholarship. Zamora will attend the University of California, San Diego, where he plans to major in Political Science before pursuing law school. With aspirations of becoming a District Attorney, he has distinguished himself through his leadership, athletic involvement, church service, and dedication to helping others. He also looks forward to broadening his perspective through an upcoming mission trip to Japan. His confidence, compassion, and commitment to public service made him an outstanding choice for the Youth Enrichment Fund's highest scholarship award.
Rida Athar received a $5,000 Destiny Scholarship, recognizing her remarkable perseverance and determination. Born in India and raised in a hardworking family, Athar credits her upbringing with instilling the values of respect, resilience, and discipline. She will attend the University of California, Riverside, where she plans to major in Biomedical Sciences with the goal of becoming a physician. Her adaptability, academic achievement, and unwavering sense of purpose impressed the scholarship selection committee.
Also receiving a $5,000 Destiny Scholarship was Sandra Sanchez, who will attend San Diego State University to pursue a career in Crime Scene Investigation. Sanchez has demonstrated exceptional leadership both in and outside the classroom. As a former Queen on the Santa Fe Springs Princess Court, she organized a community shoe drive that collected more than 200 pairs of shoes for local families in need. Guided by kindness, integrity, and a passion for serving others, she exemplifies the values the Destiny Scholarship was created to recognize.
2026 Powell Grant Recipient
Matthew Diaz was awarded a $2,500 Powell Grant. As the first member of his family to attend college, Diaz will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he plans to pursue studies in music, acting, and video production. A gifted performer and creative storyteller, he thrives in artistic environments where imagination and innovation come together. Reflecting on his creative work, Diaz shared that every project begins with a simple idea and grows through persistence and dedication until it becomes a reality—a philosophy that continues to guide both his education and artistic pursuits.
2026 Powell Grant & Vocational Grant Recipient
Tomas Villarraga Gil earned the distinction of receiving both the Powell Grant and the Vocational Grant, recognizing his academic promise and commitment to a skilled profession. He plans to pursue a career in architecture, inspired by his desire to design homes tailored to the unique needs of individuals and families. Born in Colombia, Tomas has developed a deep appreciation for European architectural styles and hopes to blend those influences into innovative designs throughout the United States. Guided by his faith, family, and commitment to community, he looks forward to creating spaces that improve lives for generations to come.
2026 Vocational Grant Recipients
Lincy Hernandez received a $2,000 Vocational Grant and will attend the University of California, Davis, where she plans to complete her undergraduate studies before entering veterinary school. Passionate about caring for large animals, Hernandez has already demonstrated her commitment to service by volunteering at a Therapeutic Riding Center, where she assists individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities. Though quiet by nature, her dedication speaks volumes. She lives by the belief that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing wholeheartedly.
Also receiving a $2,000 Vocational Grant was Fabion Orozco, a recent graduate of Santa Fe High School. He will attend the University of Portland to study Computer Science, where he hopes to build a career centered on innovation and problem-solving. Valuing ethics, creativity, communication, and analytical thinking, Orozco is eager to use technology to create meaningful solutions that positively impact others.
Celebrating a Destiny Success Story
One of the evening's most inspiring moments was recognizing Maya Mercado-Garcia, the Youth Enrichment Fund's 2022 Destiny Scholarship recipient and a proud Santa Fe High School alumna. This year, Maya graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Bachelor of Science in Educational Sciences with a minor in Public Policy.
When Maya arrived at UC Berkeley at just 17 years old, she was eager to learn but uncertain about the direction her future would take. Rather than limiting herself to a single path, she embraced every opportunity the university offered. Through involvement in student organizations, volunteer initiatives, and academic programs, she discovered new passions while developing into a confident leader.
